Happy new year everyone! Some of us returned to work last week, everyone else commences work or school tomorrow with energy, zeal and perhaps a New Year resolution. I used the holiday to reflect on the past year; what I achieved, my mistakes, and most importantly how I spent my time. I found that I started the year intending to be better and do better in all things important to me, my relationships with God and family, work-life and my sense of self. I soon got swept along by the issues outside of my control, and my response to issues in and out of my control. So this year I am intending to live intentionally rather than with the intention to be better, by gaining autonomy mastery and purpose. Autonomy, mastery and purpose is a concept that some of us are familiar with. For further details please read Daniel Pink’s book, ‘Drive’. Autonomy, our desire to be self-directed, and in my case with an emphasis on ‘self’ rather than response directed. Purpose, the desire to do something meaningful and important. Mastery, the urge to get better. So I am starting 2020 with the autonomy to control my response to every situation, get better by having mastery over my response with the purpose of being of service in the important things in my life. Let’s trigger the intrinsic motivators that help us to be the best we can be this year by finding our autonomy, mastery and purpose in whatever that may be for you. It’s worth spending some time on. Perhaps you may want to ask me how I got on at the end of the year. Happy New year :) Did I mention Autonomy, Mastery and Purpose, Google it ;)
